safety knife block

The kitchen is probably the most dangerous room in your home when you consider the sharp objects, electrical equipment and naked flames that are regularly encountered in this area. Whether yours is complete with all the modern accessories or if it’s in need of a refit, safety in this area should never be taken for granted.

Check out the quick guide below for some simple ways to improve safety while you are cooking and preparing food.

Use knives safely

Most people have been injured by a cooking knife at some point and even the smallest cuts can be painful so avoiding accidents is the only way to avoid serious injuries. Storing your knives properly is vital to protecting people from cuts. Although it’s easy to throw sharp knives in the cutlery draw this could lead to injuries if people don’t realise or forget these knives are stored there. Knife blocks or magnetic knife racks are ideal for storing sharp knives in a visible and safe place, well away from the reach of children. Sharpening your knives regularly will mean that they can glide through meat and vegetables and not slip off and cut your fingers instead. If you drop a knife on the floor make sure you ignore the impulse to catch it and stand back instead. You may naturally reach out to grab the knife but it’s much safer to let it hit the floor, be sure to move your feet well out of the way though!

Implement fire safety

No other space in your home will see quite so much heat and naked flames as your cooking area. There are also a lot of fuels in this area to make fires burn out of control or cause explosions such as hot cooking oil or gas from hobs and the oven. When you’re heating oil on the hob, make sure you stay with it as within seconds hot oil can go from a death trap for vegetables to a death trap for the members of your household. Hot oil can burst into flames if it’s heated for too long. If this situation happens then if it’s safe to do so, cover the pan with a damp tea towel. Throwing water directly onto a hot oil fire can cause a potentially devastating explosion.

Another element which doesn’t mix so well with water is electricity. Avoid accidents by keeping your electrical items such as kettles well away from the sink so water can’t be accidentally sprayed onto them. Don’t let electrical cords from kitchen equipment drape over the oven, toaster or microwave as heat could build up and even burn through the cord. Consider investing in some extra fire safety equipment such as extinguishers or a fire blanket so if an emergency situation does happen you can deal with it safely.

Have your electrical equipment serviced regularly or treat yourself to a new washing machine or cooker if yours have seen better days. Many new models of appliances come with added safety features and can help improve the overall safety of your food preparation area.

Planning ahead can make the difference between a great family memory and something that everyone wants to forget. Even if you’re not in any imminent danger, not knowing what to expect on an outing in the wilderness can turn a great day into one where everyone just wants to go home.

The first thing to be aware of is that the weather can change considerably even over the course of just one day. While it probably wonÂ’t start snowing in the middle of summer, it can get chilly quickly so itÂ’s important to bring layers of clothes for everyone in the family in case of a sudden change. On the same note, itÂ’s not unusual for a chilly morning to turn into an extremely hot day, so again, dress in layers so that you can remove items of clothing as the day gets warmer. You might also want to prepare for rainstorms in the form of ponchos, which often can be packed into small bags and easily tossed into a backpack.

Keep in mind the ages of the people you are going out with. Children cannot handle extreme heat as well as adults, so make sure you pack plenty of water and try to keep most hiking to the mornings and evenings when itÂ’s not so hot.

While this is especially true for inexperienced hikers, even people experienced in the wilderness can get easily lost in the woods. Turn this into a game by teaching your children how to look for and recognize landmarks. You can also use a compass to keep track of which direction your going in.

ItÂ’s also important to never hike alone. Each adult in your group should have a pack with safety items such as a whistle, matches, a knife, emergency signals, a basic first aid kit, a blanket, water and a flashlight in case you get separated. All children should wear a whistle around their necks and know how to use it in an emergency (only in an emergency) in case they wander off and cannot find their way back.

Be aware of plants such as poison ivy and poison oak that can cause rashes and wear long sleeved shirts and long pants while hiking. Long sleeves and pants will also help protect against ticks, but itÂ’s always important to do a tick check every evening to remove any ticks.

If you are camping overnight and plan on setting up a tent, take some time to find an appropriate site. This includes making sure the ground is free of debris such as broken glass and that there are not characteristics nearby that might attract animals.

The end of the day when youÂ’re sitting around the campfire can generate the best memories, but itÂ’s important to teach kids to not horse around near the fires. ItÂ’s even more important to never leave even the smallest fire unattended since it can easily and quickly spark a larger fire. You can extinguish a fire by dumping water on it or shoveling dirt onto it before leaving.

Taking these precautions can make day and camping trips enjoyable experiences that you and your children will look forward to for years to come.

Occasionally, every homeowner is required to do small fix-it job around their home. Not every homeowner is a full-fledged “handyman,” but it’s still important to have a small tool kit that is clean, organized, and in a good state of repair. Here are the top 10 tools that every homeowner’s tool kit ought to contain:

1. Hammer

A hammer is required to drive brads or nails. Hammers come in various sizes, generally sized by ounces of the head. A 12 ounce hammer is fairly light and will drive a brad for hanging a picture, but if you have nail that needs to be driven into a piece of wood, a 16 ounce hammer is much more useful.

2. Flat Head Screwdriver

You’ll need one with a mid-range slot about 1/4 inch across the head. The end of the screwdriver should be good and square for safety reasons. If you can afford it, purchase a small set of 3 or 4 different size screwdrivers.

3. Philips Head Screwdriver

For the average homeowner, a #2 point screwdriver will be most useful because it will fit the majority of screws. If using an older screwdriver, be sure to inspect the condition of the tip. It should have good, crisp points.

4. Adjustable Wrench

An adjustable wrench (often incorrectly referred to as a crescent wrench) is a critical part of any tool kit. It fits square and hex nuts ranging from 1/4 inch usually up to 1 inch. If you wish, you can also purchase an adjustable wrench that will fit nuts larger than 1 inch across.

5. Slip Joint Pliers

The hole in one side of a pair of slip joint pliers will look like a figure 8. This is so the pliers can accommodate two different sizes of grips, small and large. Remember that if you use a pair of pliers to hold or turn a tap, it’s important to first get a very good grip. If the pliers slip, the head of the tap or nut will be damaged and a wrench will never fit it again.

6. Alligator Pliers

This tool is often found in a plumber’s tool kit, but can be useful for the average homeowner, as well. Alligator pliers allow you to grasp larger items, usually ranging from 1/4 inch up to perhaps 1-1/2 inches square.

7. Scissors

Every homeowner’s tool kit should have one set of good quality scissors.

8. Side Cutters

Side cutters look like a pair of pliers with cutter jaws. They will cut through rope or metal wire much easier than scissors will.

9. Tape Assortment

An assortment of different tapes will also come in handy. Some good types to include are duct tape, masking tape, and clear packing tape.

10. Hardware Kit

A small hardware kit is a critical part of your tool kit, and can be easily purchased at most hardware stores. A hardware kit will contain an assortment of items: brads for hanging pictures and taps, nuts and bolts, wood screws, and even some sheet metal screws for repairing many household items.

Your homeowner’s tool kit can be as small as the items listed above or large as you want it to be. Many homeowners begin with the items listed above, and then allow their tool kit to grow naturally over time. Whatever size tool kit you have, if it contains these 10 essential items, you’ll be ready for most small repair jobs around your home.

Air travel has certainly become more troublesome since 9/11. However, most travelers would agree that the new restrictions are not without cause. That said, understanding these new restrictions can be a bit problematic. For instance, are you allowed to carry a bowie knife aboard a plane? You might be surprised by the answer to that question – yes, you can. However, you’ll have to follow some special rules setup by the TSA to maintain safety aboard planes. How do you go about carrying your bowie knife on the plane? First, don’t put it in your carryon bag, or wear it on your belt. These are sure ways to be stopped and investigated by the airport security personnel. In order to transport your knife aboard an airplane, you will need to put it in your checked baggage and leave it with the ticket desk. You should also ask whether or not sharp objects need to be declared. Firearms, ammunition and even paintball guns are required to be declared, so your knife might also. However, the news is not all bad. The TSA does allow you to carry a bowie knife with you if it is packed in your suitcase, so long as that suitcase is checked at the ticket counter and is not a carryon item. Of course, there are a couple of further caveats to this, as well. Your knife must be securely packed, sheathed and safe.

It cannot be left loose inside your suitcase, nor can you pack it without its sheath. Interestingly, the same rules apply to swords, razors and other knives. If this seems a bit inconvenient, remember, you shouldn’t have any need for your knife during the flight, so packing it away before hand should be no issue. Next, you will also need to wrap the bowie knife in something – bubble wrap works well. Actually, if you can manage it, you should box your knife, wrapping and all. This will provide the utmost protection for baggage handlers and inspectors who might come into contact with your luggage and the knife itself. As long as you follow these precautions, you can carry anything in your suitcase from a bowie knife to scissors, swords and even firearms (broken down into component pieces, of course). As you can see, taking that bowie knife with you is not as difficult as you might have thought. Of course, these rules might pose a problem if you were only going to take a carryon bag and didn’t intend to have any checked baggage. In this case, consider shipping your knife ahead to your destination if possible.

The transition from childhood to adolescence is where kids develop their curiosity on the world they are living. Kids at this age encounter rapid changes in their body as well as in their lives. They test their capacity although they are still dependent on their parents. They test new things without consulting in someone older and think of themselves as grown ups. Kids of this age are the most vulnerable to danger.

Internet threats to Kids Age 11-13 Years Old

Kids age 11-13 start to utilize the internet for school projects and research. They also use the internet to play online games, visit pop star sites, use instant messaging, use e-mail, and download music.

They also start building relationships from online acquaintances, develop sexual interest and may look on pornographic sites, and can easily be lured to enter personal information through registration forms, contests or surveys or reveal personal information to strangers.

To protect them from internet dangers, here are the important safety tips.

•    Set up rules on when and what purpose the internet should be used. This doesn’t mean though that you restrict them from using the internet outside school-related work. Just make sure that they are guided in the right ways to use the internet. •    Take time to surf the internet with your kids. In this way, you will know the sites they are visiting and you can recommend sites that are suited for their age.

•    The internet connected computer should be placed in an open area and not in the kids’ bedroom.

•    Place a security setting on the computer so that your kids can’t access or accidentally open sites that aren’t suitable for them.

•    Tell them to ignore spam mails and not to open email attachments from unknown senders.

•    Talk to them about pornographic websites and direct them to good websites for health and sexuality.

•    Tell your kids not to disclose any personal information about them or your family including your names, address, their schools, email address, passwords and bank account numbers.

•    Warn them about the danger of online chat and talking to strangers online.

•    Teach your kids to become responsible to their actions online and not to engage into fights and bullying.

Since kids of this age still lack correct judgment and feel otherwise, online is a place where they can encounter great danger. Imposing these safety tips will help reduce these dangers.

God Help Our Kids?

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/nottinghamshire/7236638.stm

Four pupils at a junior school have been excluded after a knife was discovered in one of their bags.
Three boys have been excluded for seven days and a 10-year-old boy they allegedly threatened has been told to stay away for three days.
A vegetable knife was found in the bag of the 10-year-old who attends St Ann’s Well Junior School, Nottingham.
In a letter to parents the head teacher said the safety of the pupils was the school’s top priority.

now kids as young as 10 seem to be taking knifes into school, it just gets worse.

how would kids this young know about carrying knifes i must ask????

Older siblings Kamran – I assume you don’t have any. My little brother in law is just turned 11, but my partner is 25. The middle one is 16, so the little one gets exposed to stuff that perhaps he shouldn’t. Such is the nature of siblings!!

Though you are right, it is disgusting, and why any 10 year old thinks it is RIGHT is beyond me. I think it must lie with either parenting (which then allows older siblings to influence) or television. But letting your child watch that would come under parenting I suppose.

EDIT: I hope to god I can keep my two little boys away from it, actually I’d rather the world changes before they get to that age.

Should Sikhs wear crash helmets?

With todays health and safety regulations and our dangerous roads is it time sikhs were made to wear safety crash helmets on motorbikes? Also is carrying a knife around in public sending the right messages out with all the violence in the UK today ?
Would we let a samurai warrior from japan carry a ninja sword around sainsburys

I have seen loads of sikhs on bikes wearing turbans. How come when they play cricket they wear safety helmets then. This is just a stand against Brits and our laws. They refuse to conform to our laws and are laughing at us. And as an officer in the prison service, trust me, these ceremonial daggers have been used time and time again within the sikh criminal fraternity. When is the Great British public going to wake up, this country is no longer great and is certainly no longer British. Its time to make a stand, conform to our laws or leave, simple.

box knife blades

Bowie knives are some of the most versatile knives in the world. They’re fantastic for hunting, camping and even for self-protection. However, during the course of normal events, it’s quite possible that you will encounter some problems. For instance, you might decide to use your knife improperly in a pinch. Many people think nothing of using their knife blade as a screwdriver, while others mistake bowie knives for hatchets. These actions, while somewhat understandable, tend to lead to problems. The most common of these is a bent blade or knife tip. What do you do if the blade or tip of your knife becomes bent? What should you do, should you realize that the tip or blade of your knife is bent? How do you repair bowie knives with bent blades? The very first thing you need to do is scrutinize where the bend is located. The most common area of damage is to the point of the knife. This might be because you dropped the knife point first onto a hard surface, such as a rock or cement. It might also be because someone attempted to pry with the blade or use it as a screwdriver. Bowie knives should not be used thus. If just the tip of the knife is bent, you can try to bend it back as well, using a pair of pliers. Usually, this will result in the tip snapping off the blade, though. If this happens, it’s possible to use a whetstone to reshape and sharpen the damaged portion of the blade. Obviously, this is not a great scenario.

While you will have a usable knife, it certainly will not look the same ever again. A professional blacksmith or cutler will be the one best suited to repairing that bent blade. These professionals are able to handle numerous types of damage. Even if you feel that you might be able to repair the damage on your own, you might consider taking your knife to a professional simply because they can do it faster, easier and with more precision. These professionals will use high heat to make sure that your blade becomes malleable, without losing its vital temper. You’ll also find that cutlers can repair damaged blades if the tip has broken off. Though the knife will be somewhat shorter than it was originally, you’ll have a functional blade tip once more.

safety knife for children
what is a parents rights?

my 14 yr old pulled a knife on me . i called police for help. in return my 14 yr old lied to cover up him by pulling the knife by saying i hit at him! i never hit @ him. i locked the door for our safety.i got 10 yrs child protection on me been court ordered to meetings exc. he got nothing ! when i was the victim . he has also pulled a knife on my 10 yr. old . he will do whatever it takes to get out of being in trouble!he was adopted at age 2 . when is it time to give up. he has gotten nothing but privalages over all but i got court orders, counciling, loss of child care license, i tried to get him help since age 4 adhd & odd. social services is trying to make me see him & allow him to see my other children..& back into my home. what do one of us have to die first to get him help? it is not me that needs the evaluations it is him!

Well, unfortunately, liberals have taken away most of today’s parents’ rights? My parents disciplined me in ways, that still seem innocuous to me, that would get them thrown in jail today.

When your 14 year-old pulls a knife on you, you’ve already lost the battle. It sounds to me like you coddled him too much. Perhaps it’s time to put him up for adoption again. I hate to say that, I know that you care about him, but deadly-force assault is pretty serious. I take anyone threatening me with a weapon seriously, and would not allow someone that dangerous to remain in my house.

Personally, I would shoot ANYONE holding a knife to me, including someone in my family. In my family and in the families of everyone I know, you just don’t assault people with a weapon. I know a jury wouldn’t have much sympathy for me after shooting a 14 year old, but kids younger than that have killed their parents before. At the very least, I’d break the arm holding the knife and make him sorry he ever did that.

If it happens again and you have to get physical with him, DO NOT TOUCH THE KNIFE, and don’t allow him near it again. That way you can back up your claim to the police that he was threatening your life when they find only his prints on the weapon.

____________________________________________________

Euro lady, when someone threatens your LIFE, it’s time to stop worrying about being a parent and time to start protecting yourself. If he is 14, he can at least be put into foster care. However, where he REALLY belongs is the juvenile detention center because he is a FELON. There ARE truly bad people (to the contrary of your touchy-feely utopian idealism), and unfortunately, bad people are once kids too.
