safety knives and cutters

A do it yourself carpet installation does not need to be a daunting difficult task, if you are equipped with the right tools and know how, it can be a very rewarding process to let people know that you have installed carpet in your own home and done a great job.

One of the first things to do before your carpet installation is to do a lot of research on the easiest ways to install carpet. Many home improvement stores will offer workshops and other learning materials on carpet installation. Or you could do an online course or use articles. You will then need to decide on a budget, purchase carpet and underlay and organize the hire or purchase of tools that you need to undertake this installation on your own.

There are many tools that you will require to lay the carpet. You do not need to purchase all of the items needed if you are only going to lay carpet in one room, items like a knee kicker or seam roller and cutter are available for hire, but you may want to purchase safety glasses, gloves and a hammer as you may use these items in other repair jobs you undertake around the house.

To limit the dust left and creating a larger clean up job before you lay the new carpet, vacuum the old carpet. You can then cut the old carpet in 4foot strips and start pulling it up, rolling the carpet as you go. Remove the underlay as it is not worth keeping, many believe that you can reuse the underlay, but it may be in worse condition then the carpet is.

The next step in your DIY carpet installation is to put down new tackles strips. These need to be placed around the room, and butted up in corners but not across the door entrance. Then put down the underlay and keep in place with staples.

This next step needs to be done with extreme care and correctness. Measure the carpet approximately six inches longer then the room lay the carpet down and then mark the carpet on the underside and trim of the overlapped carpet. Do this with care and you do not want to cut the underlay, you may want to place a board between the carpet and underlay when cutting the carpet with a utility knife.

Your next step in your do it yourself carpet installation is to use your knee kicker by using the force from your knee to stretch the carpet over the tackles strips to hold the carpet in place. Start in a corner and along the back wall then move backwards towards the front of the room to ensure the carpet in secured on all tackles strips. Then remove any overlapped edges with a trimmer.

You are almost done. Just do a check around the edges of the room and use a stair tool to tuck in any parts of carpet that are not tucked in, ensure all tackles strips are secured, trim around the door and add a door strip, then show off the great job that you have done installing carpet in your own home.

You’ve discovered that do it yourself carpet installation is not at all that difficult with the right tools and some elbow grease. If you’d like to learn more about carpet installation you may visit the website.
