Moving Supplies

Moving supplies and relocation can be an exciting time. It can also be a time fraught with worry and apprehension. Placing your entire life inside a bunch of moving boxes is no easy task. But it doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Tackle some of the stress head-on with these tips on how to stay organized during the packing process.

After considering what items will be put in the moving boxes (think of moving as an opportunity to streamline your life and possessions of clutter with a garage sale or trip to Goodwill), identify those items that require specialized packing. These items might be fragile, possess awkward shapes, or be larger pieces that will be harder to move. Take measurements of these items, make a list, and then go shopping.

You may purchase your moving supplies at a local retailer, but for the best prices and variety, consider the Internet. Some online packing suppliers deal with larger companies, so make sure you will be able to purchase smaller quantities. One place you might be able to save money is with moving boxes. Many grocery or liquor/wine stores have boxes available for free. Give the store manager a few weeks’ notice so he or she can put aside what you need for moving packing supplies. Keep in mind though that retail boxes do tend to be larger and can be more difficult to pack your items in securely.

Before the moving packing supplies, plan ahead for what you will need for the first night and day by packing essential items in a separate bag or suitcase and carry it with you. This might include a change of clothes, a towel, prescription drugs, a toothbrush and other personal items. In separate bags store plastic utensils, paper plates and cups, toilet paper, trash bags, snacks and beverages, a box cutter or utility knife, and anything else you might want.

With millions of Americans moving supplies each year, odds are that even the most organized person may forget something. Those “out of sight, out of mind” moving objects are at the highest risk of being left behind.

Once you arrive at your destination and begin to unpack, sort moving supplies by content labels and identify one or two boxes in each room to open immediately. As you unpack the moving supplies, note any damaged or lost items and check the condition of each item. Empty boxes should be broken down and recycled along with packing materials.
